Let's Photobomb with Amazon Web Services and Cloud Computing!

In this workshop, we will implement a proof-of-concept service with Amazon Web Services (AWS) Serverless services. We will be making a photo-bombing squirrel service using AWS Lambda. In our service, we’ll input a photo. Then, a squirrel will photo-bomb the image, stealing the focus of the image, thereby making the actual subject of the image blurred. We will walk through how to leverage AWS “serverless” infrastructure to create a fast and infinitely scalable web service. You will get to configure AWS to stand up your very own service in the cloud using Lambda and S3. You will also get the opportunity to glimpse into the underbelly of Cloud services and get your hands (a little) dirty. No prior cloud experience is required. Arrive with your internet-enabled laptop and personal AWS account to get the most out of this workshop.

Creating Microservices for Cloud-Native Deployments

Microservices? Cloud? Cloud-Native Development? We hear them often and they are everywhere in the industry these days. What are they? What’s the deal with them? What are they for and why should you care? If you are interested or simply curious about any of these, come and join us. In this session, we will attempt to demystify and offer you a practitioner’s perspective on what they are and why they matter.

We will also show you how you can easily build your first Java microservice using Eclipse MicroProfile and Open Liberty, an open programming model and an open source application server for microservices.

Digitizing Construction – BIM Builds Better

The construction industry is notoriously slow to embrace change and technological advancement. However, the new wave of technologically-savvy university graduates are changing the way we build.

This workshop will explore how Building Information Modelling (BIM) is aiding the Canadian construction industry, which areas we need to improve on and how you can help drive the change that the industry still requires.
